A Journey into the Heart of the Himalayas

Spiti Valley sits at an average altitude of 3,800 meters above sea level in the northeastern corner of Himachal Pradesh, bordering Tibet. For most of the year, it is cut off by snow, and the brief summer window from June to October makes it one of India's most sought-after off-beat destinations. This tour is designed to take you through this landscape at a pace that allows for genuine acclimatization, exploration, and connection with the places you visit.

The route begins in Manali, a well-known mountain town and a natural staging point for any Spiti journey. From here, the tour takes a less-traveled path through Jibhi and Kalpa before entering the Spiti Valley proper at Tabo, giving travelers a gradual and scenic introduction to the high Himalayas rather than a rushed ascent.

Manali & Jibhi: Green Valleys and Forested Hills

Manali is the starting point of the journey, set in the Kullu Valley along the Beas River. Surrounded by apple orchards, deodar cedar forests, and snow-capped peaks, it offers an immediately striking introduction to the Himalayas. The route then dips south to Jibhi, a quieter, lesser-known valley town known for its wooden houses, small waterfalls, and calm riverside atmosphere. Jibhi provides a gentle transition before the landscape grows more rugged.

Kalpa: Apple Orchards and Kinner Kailash Views

Kalpa is a small village in the Kinnaur district, set against the imposing backdrop of the Kinner Kailash mountain range. At around 2,960 meters, it offers sweeping views of snow-covered peaks across the Sutlej Valley and is famous for its apple and apricot orchards. The old Kinnauri village architecture, Buddhist temples, and the palpable sense of remoteness make Kalpa one of the most rewarding stops on this route.

Tabo: A Monastery Older Than a Thousand Years

Tabo, in the Spiti Valley, is home to the Tabo Monastery,  founded in 996 CE and considered one of the oldest continuously operating Buddhist monasteries in the Himalayan region. The monastery complex contains ancient murals, stucco sculptures, and manuscripts of great historical and artistic significance. Tabo itself is a quiet, compact village set in the wide brown valley of the Spiti River, an arresting contrast to the green hills left behind.

Kaza: The Heart of Spiti Valley

Kaza is the administrative headquarters of the Spiti Valley and serves as the base for exploring the surrounding area. At approximately 3,800 meters, it is a compact town with guesthouses, small restaurants, and a distinct frontier character. From Kaza, the tour ventures out to the iconic Key Monastery, a dramatic multi-story structure perched on a rocky hill, and the high-altitude village of Kibber, which sits at around 4,200 meters and was once considered one of the highest permanently inhabited villages in the world accessible by road.

Designed for Genuine Mountain Travellers

This tour best suits travelers interested in high-altitude landscapes, Buddhist culture, and off-the-beaten-track destinations. The roads in Spiti are mountain tracks, beautiful but rough, and the journey requires a spirit of adventure and physical readiness for altitude. The company provides experienced mountain drivers with private 4x4 vehicles throughout. The itinerary allows for adequate time for acclimatization and rest at each stop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to high-altitude areas?

It can be, provided you are in good general health and allow time for acclimatization. The itinerary is designed with gradual altitude gain. We recommend consulting a doctor before travel if you have any cardiac or respiratory concerns.

What kind of vehicle is used for the journey?

We use private 4x4 vehicles (Innova Crysta or equivalent) driven by experienced mountain drivers familiar with the Spiti Valley roads. The roads are mountain terrain and not suitable for standard sedans.

Can we customise the itinerary?

Yes. Duration, specific stops, and accommodation level can all be adjusted based on your preferences. Contact us to discuss a tailored plan.

What's the refund policy?

Full refund for cancellations 30+ days before departure. 50% for 15–30 days. 25% for 7–14 days. Non-refundable within 7 days of departure.

Is the mobile network and internet available throughout the area?

Mobile connectivity is limited and intermittent throughout most of the Spiti Valley. BSNL SIM cards have the best coverage in the region. Internet access at hotels is basic. We recommend treating the trip as a digital detox journey.

What languages are guides available in?

English and Hindi. Local guides in Spiti and Kalpa may speak regional languages, including Spitian and Kinnauri, in addition to Hindi.

Day 1: Arrive in Manali

Highlights: Arrival, hotel check-in, orientation, rest, and acclimatisation

Arrive in Manali, either by overnight bus from Delhi or Chandigarh, or by flight to Bhuntar Airport followed by a road transfer. Check into your hotel and spend the day resting and acclimatising to the altitude (Manali sits at approximately 2,050 metres). In the evening, take a leisurely walk along the Mall Road or visit the Old Manali area. Your guide will brief you on the journey ahead, road conditions, and what to expect over the coming days.

End of day: Overnight in Manali.

Day 2: Manali to Jibhi

Highlights: Jalori Pass, Serolsar Lake (optional), Jibhi waterfall, riverside forest walk

After breakfast, depart Manali and drive south through the Kullu Valley before turning toward the quieter Banjar Valley. The route passes through Jalori Pass (approximately 3,120 metres), one of the lower Himalayan passes, offering panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. If conditions allow, a short trek from Jalori Pass to Serolsar Lake, a beautiful high-altitude lake, can be done before descending to Jibhi. Jibhi is a small, serene village known for its wooden houses, dense forests, and a small waterfall. The contrast with the busier Manali is immediate and refreshing.

End of day: Overnight in Jibhi.

Day 3: Jibhi to Kalpa

Highlights: Drive through Kinnaur, Sutlej River valley, Kinner Kailash views, Kalpa village walk

Depart Jibhi and drive toward Kinnaur district, a long but scenic drive through the Sutlej River gorge. The road hugs the cliff face in places and passes through tunnels carved into the mountain, with the Sutlej roaring below. Arrive in Kalpa in the afternoon. Kalpa is a small Kinnauri village at around 2,960 metres, famous for its views of the Kinner Kailash range, the sacred snow-covered peaks that dominate the skyline. Take an evening walk through the village, past apple orchards, old stone temples, and traditional Kinnauri houses with their distinctive sloping wooden roofs.

End of day: Overnight in Kalpa.

Day 4: Kalpa to Tabo

Highlights: Drive into Spiti Valley, Tabo Monastery (founded 996 CE), ancient murals and sculptures

Today, the landscape changes dramatically. Depart Kalpa and continue along the Sutlej before turning into the Spiti River Valley. The vegetation thins and the terrain becomes rockier and more arid, the characteristic look of a high-altitude cold desert. Arrive in Tabo by afternoon. Visit the Tabo Monastery complex, founded in 996 CE, it is among the oldest continuously functioning monasteries in the Himalayan region. The nine temples within the complex contain remarkable ancient murals and clay sculptures that have been preserved for over a thousand years. The monastery is also known as the "Ajanta of the Himalayas" for its wall paintings.

End of day: Overnight in Tabo.

Day 5: Tabo to Kaza

Highlights: Dhankar Monastery and Lake (en route), Pin Valley (optional), arrive in Kaza

After breakfast, drive from Tabo toward Kaza, the main town of the Spiti Valley. En route, stop at Dhankar, a medieval village perched dramatically on a cliff face above the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers. The Dhankar Monastery, which clings to the cliff above the village, offers one of the most striking views in the entire valley. A short walk up to Dhankar Lake is possible if time allows. Continue to Kaza, arriving by late afternoon. Spend the evening exploring Kaza's small market and getting a feel for life in this remote Himalayan town.

End of day: Overnight in Kaza.

Day 6: Kaza - Key Monastery & Kibber Village

Highlights: Key Monastery, Kibber village, Chicham Bridge (nearby), high-altitude landscape exploration

A full day of excursions from Kaza. Begin with the Key (Ki) Monastery, dramatically situated on a conical rocky hill at approximately 4,166 metres. Founded in the 11th century, it houses a significant collection of thangka paintings, murals, and Buddhist scriptures, and is home to a community of monks. From Key, continue to Kibber, a remote village at around 4,200 metres, set amidst a stark landscape of eroded hills and open sky. In the vicinity, the Chicham Bridge is another remarkable engineering feat in this extreme terrain. Return to Kaza in the evening.

End of day: Overnight in Kaza.

Day 7: Kaza to Manali

Highlights: Return drive over Kunzum Pass, Chandratal Lake view (seasonal, subject to road conditions)

Depart Kaza early for the long but spectacular drive back to Manali via Kunzum Pass (approximately 4,590 metres), one of the high passes that marks the boundary between the Lahaul and Spiti regions. The pass offers wide views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks. Depending on seasonal road conditions, a brief detour toward Chandratal (Moon Lake), a high-altitude crescent-shaped lake of brilliant blue, may be possible. The descent through the Lahaul Valley and on to Manali passes through a series of dramatic river gorges and mountain villages. Arrive in Manali by evening.

End of day: Overnight in Manali.

Day 8: Manali - Departure

Highlights: Morning at leisure, onward transfer or departure

After breakfast, check out of your hotel. Depending on your onward travel plans, whether you are taking an overnight bus to Delhi, a flight from Bhuntar, or continuing elsewhere in Himachal Pradesh, your driver will assist with the required transfer. If time allows before departure, a final morning walk in Manali's Old Town or along the Beas River makes for a peaceful close to the journey.

End of tour. Safe travels onward.
